Birdsall-Dreiss Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Clifford (Cliff) Voss, will speak at Concord University on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015. His lecture begins at 5 p.m. in Room 400 of the Science Building. The lecture title is “Informing Management of the World’s Largest Groundwater Systems with Simply-Structured Model Analysis.”
There is no admission charge and the community is invited to attend. Dr. Voss will also be meeting with Concord students for lunch and during afternoon classes.
Dr. Voss works as a senior scientist with the National Research Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and is based in Menlo Park, Calif. He is an internationally recognized expert in groundwater modeling with more than 35 years of project management, implementation, fieldwork and research experience.
“Effective management of natural resources, like groundwater, impacts the lives of numerous people and the economies of nations. Groundwater provides an essential and critical resource for hundreds of millions, even billions of people around the world, a fact highlighted by the recent multi-year drought in California,” Dr. Stephen Kuehn, associate professor in the Division of Mathematics, Science and Health, said.
Dr. Voss’ work on groundwater systems includes: computer model development and effective model use for scientific evaluation of hydrogeologic systems; groundwater resources development, management and protection; coastal and island groundwater resources subject to seawater intrusion; and use of the subsurface for energy production/storage and toxic waste isolation. The practical methodology and models that Dr. Voss and his colleagues have developed are now used around the world for managing both the quantity and quality of water supplies.
