West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will host the annual Dr. James E. Brimhall Science Bowl on Friday, Nov. 2, beginning at 9 a.m. in Hamblin Hall.
The competition will feature 24 teams from 11 area high schools. The top three teams will advance to the West Virginia Regional Science Bowl in February 2019 in Morgantown.
Faculty from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will serve as judges and moderators for the competition.
The Science Bowl will kick off at 9 a.m. on Friday with opening remarks in the auditorium of Wallace Hall. Teams will then move to Hamblin Hall where competition will begin at 9:15 a.m. Teams are selected to compete at random answering questions in a quiz bowl style format. This will be a double elimination tournament.
The following schools will participate in this year’s competition: Capital High School, Clay County High School, George Washington High School, Herbert Hoover High School, Logan High School, Nitro High School, Poca High School, Riverside High School, Saint Albans High School, Sherman High School and South Charleston High School.
These schools are all part of the Regional Education Service Agencies (RESA) Region II and Region III.
When teams are not competing, student members, coaches and parents will be able to tour the WVSU campus to see the college experience firsthand. Representatives from WVSU’s Admissions and Financial Aid offices will be available and provide a presentation to students and their parents about preparing for college.
The Dr. James E. Brimhall Science Bowl is named in honor of late professor, Jim Brimhall. Brimhall was an experimental nuclear physicist at Hamline University in Minnesota and at the University of Pittsburgh. He began teaching at West Virginia State University in 1966 and later became an administrator, serving 11 years as Vice President of Administration, before returning to teach physics full-time.
